NORMAL, Ill. — The progress comes slowly but it’s coming for the young Central College men’s golf team.
The Dutch stand in a tie for 12th at the 20-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course after carding 316 Friday. No. 5-rated Illinois Wesleyan fired a 5-under-par 283 to grab a 12-shot lead over Aurora University. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is third in the 36-hole tourney at 303. Central is tied with Wabash College (Ind.) and a shot behind Lake Forest College (Ill.)
Harold Dobernecker (freshman, Nevada) was even-par through 12 holes and finished with a 3-over 75. He is tied for 15th individually while Dustin Haines (sophomore, Sigourney) shot 76 to share 24th. Jake Moffett (freshman, Mount Pleasant) followed with 80, Lucas Wendel (sophomore, Le Claire, Pleasant Valley HS) had 85 and Kyle Gabos (sophomore, Plymouth, Minn., Maple Grove HS) shot 87.
Playing as an at-large entrant, John Oltman (freshman, Pella) shot 81.
“Harold and Dustin played very well,” coach Mel Blasi said. “Harold probably played even better than his 75. He had two bad holes in a row and both of those could have easily been pars but he made double-bogey on both of them.”
Blasi saw some other good signs.
“Jake Moffett played very well and much better than his score,” he said. “He made a triple on No. 17, which could have easily been a birdie because he was in good position off the tee. But we didn’t know the course and he hit one just a little bit right and ended up out of bounds.
“We’ll look for better things tomorrow.”
