PELLA — The Central College women’s tennis team won its second American Rivers Conference game by a 5-4 margin against Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.
After beating Coe College 5-4 on the road last weekend, Central (4-4, 2-0 conference) won by an identical score against the Prairie Wolves (0-3, 0-2 conference).
“We didn’t play our greatest today, but we still found a way to win,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “The fact that we only played okay and we could still get it done is very encouraging.”
Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) was 2-0 on the night. After an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles with Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda), Lewton was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles.
“She played tough doubles and tough singles,” Ferrell said. “She didn’t necessarily play the way she likes to play in singles, but she played smart and like a senior should. She really led by example in her match.”
Sarah Schirm (senior, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) and Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles. Schirm won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Brianna Lindstrom (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Dutch travel to Grand View University in Des Moines for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday.
