PELLA — Career-best performances resulted in American Rivers Conference honors for a pair of Central College athletes.
Sophomore Megan Johnson (Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS) was named the league women’s cross country runner of the week while sophomore Madison Clark (Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic HS) was tabbed as the women’s golfer of the week.
Johnson took first place at the season-opening Central Dutch Invitational Friday evening. She finished the 5,000-meter A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex course in a career-best 19:43.9 to top the 43-runner field and help the Dutch take first place in a three-team race. Johnson is the first Central women’s runner to receive the award in three years.
The Dutch travel to Grinnell for the Les Duke Invitational Saturday.
Clark posted new career-low scores in three straight rounds last week. She tied for 10th place at Wednesday’s William Penn Invitational with an 81 at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course as Central took third in a 10-team field. Saturday at Sunday at the Luther Norse Classic at Dike, she shot 78-76—154 and finished fourth individually, two shots behind teammate and fellow Bloomington native Mackenzie Biggs (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill., Normal Community HS), who finished third. Central took second place in a 12-team field and was the top finisher among American Rivers schools.
The Dutch are at the Wartburg Fall Invitational in Waverly Saturday and Sunday.
