ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — It was a breakthrough performance for the Central College men’s cross country team Friday evening.
The Dutch were third in a strong 24-team field at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College (Ill.). The University of Chicago (Ill.) ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division III Midwest Region, won with 38 points while No. 5 Loras College had 78 and No. 8 Central had 106.
“It was probably the best meet we’ve had in many years,” coach Joe Dunham said. “It was good to see things come together.”
Central’s entire top seven registered personal-best 8,000-meter times.
Caleb Silver (junior, Conrad, BCLUW) was eighth in 25:24.2, nearly 6 seconds faster than his previous best. Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) was 12th in 25:39.0, Adam Sylvia (junior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS) was 24th in 26:00.9, blasting past his personal best of 26:45. Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) was 26th in 26:06.5, Randy Jimenez (freshman, Liberty Center, Southeast Warren HS) was 43rd in 26:33.3, Thatcher Krob (senior, Lisbon) was 79th in 27:10.1 and Jacob Sanders (junior, Nevada) was 93rd in 27:26.6.
The Dutch runners were bunched together much of the way.
“The guys packed up well,” Dunham said. “Caleb had a huge PR and Noah, Adam and Randy did a great job of working together. I was a little nervous they went out so fast but they were able to hold it.”
Perhaps the season’s strongest field awaits Central at the Jim Drews Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at West Salem, Wisconsin Friday, Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m. The Dutch were seventh in a 21-team field there in 2019. The field typically includes several regionally ranked Division III opponents from Minnesota and Wisconsin.
