NEWTON — It may not have been the game that Dr. Naismith invented, but it went in the books as a 30-24 Newton win over the Pella Christian girls on the Cardinal home court Friday night.

Both teams became very frustrated early on as shots would not fall, passes missed their mark and fouls began to mount. With that frustration, it was “Murphy’s Law” at it’s finest. What ever could go wrong, did go wrong.

The game opened with the Eagles taking a 6-2 lead in the first five minutes. Buckets by Joslyn Terpstra and Faith Kacmarynski along with free throws by Kacmarynski and Clair Vander Molen accounted for those points. But the Eagles would not score again in the first period while the Cardinals potted seven points to take a 9-6 lead into the second stanza.

Pella Christian won the second quarter 7-6 to trail by two at 15-13 going into intermission. In that period, Terpstra notched three free throws, Kacmarynski added a basket and a free throw and Emri Agre canned a free throw.

PC gained a 20-15 lead in the first four minutes of the second half as Terpstra hit a left side drive and a pair of free throws and Jenna Van Maanen drained a three-point shot. But the lid went back on the basket and Newton out scored the Eagles 7-0 in the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 22-20 lead into the final frame.

The only point the Eagles could muster in the fourth quarter would be a basket and a pair of free throws by Terpstra. Meanwhile the Cardinals put up eight points to gain the win.

Terpstra led the Eagles with 13 points while Kacmaryinski hit double digits in rebounds with 12 and Karlie Anderson led the team in steals with six.

The Eagles will host Knoxville on Monday night and then welcome Oskaloosa on Tuesday.
