Matchup history

This is the first meeting between Pella and Winterset in the VarsityBound era (since 2006).

By the numbers

It was a tough draw for the Lady Dutch as this is just one of two Class 4A regional quarterfinal games between two teams with winning records. Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games. Winterset sophomore guard Jena Young averages 15.8 shots per game (first in Class 4A) while averaging 16.2 points per game. She accounts for about a third of the Huskies’ scoring by herself while while also averaging a team-high 3.9 assists per game. Pella cleans their glass well, averaging 21.5 defensive rebounds per game (fourth in 4A). The Lady Dutch are 4-7 in games decided by single digits while Winterset is 5-4.

One key player of Pella

Keep an eye out for Anna Vander Waal in this one. The fiery junior point guard for Pella will be challenged on both ends of the floor. She will likely take her turn at guard Winterset’s Young and trying to limit her impact on the offensive end. With the ball, Vander Waal, who leads Pella with 3.9 assists per game, needs to limit the turnovers for the Lady Dutch offense and get her teammates good looks. She also has shown the ability to chip in herself at 6.7 points per game at 40% shooting while nearly knocking down a three per game. When Vander Waal and the other guards have their games going it opens up a lot of threats for the Pella offense outside of Madison Naig.

Keys for Pella

When you play any team that heavily relies on one player to create offense, you want to force someone else to beat you. Young knows how to get to her shots or the free throw line for Winterset. Pella will try to limit what Young can do and make her unconformable or force her teammates to beat them. Offensively, expect the Lady Dutch to move the ball around and try to get everybody in a rhythm early. If it comes down to the nitty-gritty, look for Naig to make some big plays down the stretch in this regional quarterfinal.
