Pella Christian Eagles

The Pella Christian Eagles during a game earlier this season.

Who: Pella Christian (12-11) vs Albia (18-2)

What: Class 2A - District 11 - Final

Where: Oskaloosa

When: Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

Matchup history

Pella Christian is 10-4 against Albia since 2006. The Eagles had won the last four meetings before the Blue Demons’ 75-66 victory in this year’s season opener.

By the numbers

Albia’s Blake Chance is fifth in Class 2A averaging 5.7 assists per game. Turnovers could play a huge part in this one as PC averages 16.4 per game while Albia surrenders just 8.9 per game. Pella Christian is 6-4 in their last 10 games while Albia comes in at 9-1 in their previous 10 and on a seven-game winning streak.

One key player for Pella Christian

Levi Schelhaas had a tough go at it in the first meeting, shooting 3-of-12 from the field with four turnovers. He has been playing really good basketball for the Eagles down the stretch including an 11-point, six assist effort in last week’s win over Cardinal. PC will need a big game from their point guard as he will need to run the offense, limit turnovers and do his thing from deep and at the rim.

Keys for Pella Christian

Turnovers and free throws were the big difference in the first meeting. Albia won the turnover battle 19-8 and were 18-of-29 from the charity stripe while Pella Christian was just 3-of-4. The Eagles need to get both of those closer to even in the rematch. Valuing the ball and attacking the rim will be at a premium on Tuesday. The Blue Demons also got huge games from Blake Chance (31 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks) and Brayden Messamaker (23 points) in that game. It will be interesting to see what adjustments PC makes defensively to make things tough for them. With any team going through a season with a first year coach, it’s all about the improvement as the season progresses. PC started the year 2-6 and are 10-5 since. This will be a different team than what Albia saw in the first meeting as this one has a district title and a spot at substate on the line.
