As the first rural hospice in the State of Iowa, Mahaska Health Hospice Services has been providing specialized, end-of-life care to patients and their families in the region for more than 30 years.
The partnership of MHP Hospice Services allows staff to work in conjunction with each other to ensure the best possible experience for patients and their families.
Mahaska Health Hospice Services is dedicated to providing compassionate care to people with progressive and life-threatening illnesses, support to their families, and education to the community for a deeper understanding of end-of-life care.
The focus of hospice is on care and quality of life, not cure. Hospice has an emphasis on pain management and symptom control, and nurses are available around the clock.
Palliative care is for individuals who do not meet the qualifications for hospice or are not ready for hospice services. Palliative care is a short-term, home-based program for individuals who need assistance managing pain and symptoms, as well as other supportive care.
While in the Palliative Care Program, patients may continue to seek treatment in hopes of curing their illness.
Palliative care services are provided by the staff of Mahaska Health Hospice Services and are funded by a grant from United Way of Mahaska County.
Because of this, there is no charge to the patient or family for Palliative Care services. The grant does not pay for treatments or medications. At the end of Palliative Care (usually one to three months), the patient is reassessed to determine if he or she should be transitioned to another services such as home health, hospice or a nursing home.
Hospice care from Mahaska Health can be provided in the individual’s home, a nursing home or in the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House, a six-bed inpatient facility located on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa.
It is designed to bring the comforts of home to hospice patient and their families. Patients benefit from a private room in a peaceful, home-like setting with equipment, supplies and staff able to respond to each individual’s unique health needs.
