On Saturday I had the pleasure of being a part of the Mahaska County Relay for Life event. An American Cancer Society event, the relay raises money before, during and after the event to help with the fight against cancer.

Wyatt and Amanda Russell are the co-chairs for the event and they did an incredible job. This young couple took on this event after losing a very dear friend of theirs to cancer. They have spent nearly three years rebuilding the event and brought it back to the square for everyone to enjoy.

From the opening prayer and national anthem to the closing luminarias, the event was incredibly uplifting. To see so many survivors and caregivers at the event and to hear their stories is something I will truly remember forever.

The Fun Dualing Pianos were incredible. Many of our community members were up dancing in the square and having a wonderful time. From young to old, a great time was had by everyone including a Mahaska Health Partnership doctor who will remain nameless. (I will give you a hint, his initials are Dr. Hirl.)

Laughter and music. If there is a better combination than that, I really can’t think of it.

On Sunday I went to Waukee to attend the state skeet-shooting championship and watch Oskaloosa Shooting Team truly bring home the gold.

These are some truly incredibly talented young people. It was amazing for me to watch them squad by squad shoot round after round on such a scorching hot day. Some of them shot 25 out of 25 or 24 out of 25. They are state champions and it is well deserved.

Once again, it was such an uplifting day. Coaches, parents, team members all represented Oskaloosa so well. I want to give a special shout out to head coach Larry Gay for his leadership and for continuing to run such a positive program.

I know this isn’t the last time we will see great things from this team. They seem to get better and better every year.

Finally I want to share with you that I had a visit from four very special people from my corporate office this week. I was so proud to, once again, share with them the positive things going on with this newspaper thanks to all of you.

Three uplifting things all in the same week. Seems like life is good.
