Verhoef arrested

James Gareth Verhoef was arrested by Mahaska County Sheriffs officials and charged with sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child. He was arrested on July 21, 2018.

MAHASKA COUNTY — James Gareth Verhoef, 40, was charged with two counts of sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child.

The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of the sexual abuse of a child on Tuesday, July 17.

According to a press release, the office received information that the abuse had been ongoing for several years, from the time the victim was 8 to 13 years of age, at a house in the 1500 block of Adams Avenue in rural Pella. 

The Sheriff's Office investigated the matter in conjunction with members of the Iowa Department of Human Services.

As a result of the investigation, officials charged Verhoef, living in the 1500 block of Adams Avenue, with one count of sexual abuse in the second degree, which is a class B felony; one count of sexual abuse in the third degree, a class C felony; and two counts of lascivious acts with a child, class C felonies.

According to the press release, further charges are pending and the investigation into these allegations is ongoing. 

An arrest warrant was issued for Verhoef and he was taken into custody during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 21. He was arrested near Lake Red Rock in Marion County and transported to the Mahaska County Jail. Verhoef posted a $55,000 bond and was released later that same date.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
