Children and their parents had a blast constructing their street fury hot rod models at Penn Central Mall’s Wood n’ Stuff Crafts and Toys monthly “Make and Take” session Saturday.

Wood 'n’ Stuff Crafts and Toys co-owners Gene and Judy Phillips say they have been holding the “Make and Take” sessions for three years now, with the majority of the sessions occurring once a month during the winter months.

“It’s a time for parents to be with their kids,” Gene said.

At the session, children were assisted by their parents as they listened intently to Judy give the step-by step instructions for constructing a model car. Normally, the street fury model would cost about $10 in the store, but session attendees paid only $5. The street fury model, a snap tight from the Rovell line of models, is safer to construct for the kids because there is no need for glue to complete the car.

After completing the model and snacking on some of the after-session cookies, one Oskaloosa resident commented on what he thought of attending the session.

“It’s good for the families to come out and do something together. My son had a lot of fun,” said Dirk Wilkin.

Besides having fun constructing the model, Judy says the session is also a learning experience for the kids.

“It teaches the kids how to read instructions. We have just as much fun as the kids to. We always enjoy it,” said Judy.

In addition to these monthly “Make and Take” sessions, Gene and Judy Phillips say they will be holding a trophy contest in late February that is open to everyone. At the contest, trophies will be given to those who have the best constructed models from three classes: youth, teen and adult.
