OSKALOOSA — Each year, some of Mahaska County’s youngest citizens have a chance to be featured in Oskaloosa’s Lighted Christmas Parade.

The 2019 Lighted Christmas Parade will this year be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, rather than earlier in the week. This year’s theme is ‘Winter Nights and Magical Lights.’

According to a news release, the Young Ambassador Contest raises funds and promotes the parade, and is a program of Main Street Oskaloosa and the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group.

Mahaska County children who are ages 3 and up to kindergarten age are eligible to enter. Local businesses willing to display the canisters of one or more children are also being sought.

Businesses may request to sponsor their own children or children of their employees, according to the release. Business sponsors will be provided and will display a secure bank to collect monetary votes for the candidates.

The boy and girl with the most money in their canisters will be named Young Ambassadors.

Entries will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 18. Entries consist of a recent photo, no larger than 3x5, with the name, address, phone number, the child’s date of birth and the parents’ names on the back of the photo. There is a $5 registration fee.

Voting will take place from Oct. 28–Dec. 2. The Young Ambassadors will be announced at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2 in center court of Penn Central Mall. All participants will receive prizes. In addition, all candidates will be invited to participate in the Main Street Lighted Christmas Parade, Saturday, Dec. 7.
