NEW SHARON — Law enforcement say a New Sharon woman shot and killed her husband on Sunday then reported the death to authorities three days later.

New details were made public Thursday through a search warrant filed in district court.

In those filings, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office says Carol Ann Davis, 69, of New Sharon, reported the killing herself on Wednesday morning. Carol Davis has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing. She was due in court for an initial appearance Thursday morning.

Just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in rural New Sharon for a possible homicide.

According to a news release sent Wednesday evening, officers located the body of a deceased male within the residence at 2436 135th St. in rural New Sharon. The man’s identify was not released by authorities Wednesday, but court documents identify the man as her husband, Steve Davis, 55, of New Sharon.

Carol Davis told law enforcement she killed her husband by his request with a pistol, and then hid the pistol inside the residence, according to court documents.

Steve Davis’ body was transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing. Assisting the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office are the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, New Sharon Police Department, Oskaloosa Police Department, Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, and Mahaska County Emergency Management.

Carol Davis remained in custody on a $1 million cash only bond at the Mahaska County Jail as of Thursday.
