OSKALOOSA — Friends of Mahaska County Conservation volunteers paddled down the South Skunk River recently to clean up trash from the waterway.
Friends of Mahaska County Conservation Board President Rodney Anderson said because of low water conditions at Glendale Access, the group entered the water at Sheriff’s Bridge and paddled to Rose Hill Marsh.
At the end of the cleanup, the Friends Board served the volunteers a barbecue lunch.
An estimated 600 pounds of trash were collected, including tires, a tv, pieces of metal and numerous cans and bottles.
The Friends Group expressed appreciation to MCCB Dave Sedivec providing the kayaks and canoes and Adam Eischen of LDI for donating the dumpster.
The cleanup helped fulfill the Friends’ mission of protecting the ecosystems of Mahaska County.
