Gareth Stefanc and members of Scouts Troop 71 work on digging and placing bricks for a Mahaska County first responders monument. The monument is Stefanc's Eagle Scouts project.

OSKALOOSA— Gareth Stefanc and members of the Oskaloosa's Troop 71 started digging, setting the base for the bricks and forming the landscape bed for the Mahaska County First Responders Monument.

They also worked on forming the walkway for the pavers, dug 12 inches down, put in road gravel, laid leveling sand, and placed edging.

This monument is located on the Northwest side of the south pond, just a bit past the Veteran's Memorial at Forest Cemetery.

The work is for Stefanc's Eagle Scout project.

Stefanc said this project is all about honoring and memorializing all of the first responders of Mahaska County.

He said this project has been a project in planning.

“I've had to do a lot of pre-planning and then planning," he said. "I also did the fundraising and we just started digging it today.”

Some of the fundraisers he did was buying the bricks and then reselling them. They also did a spaghetti dinner which raised around $2,000 dollars.

The next workday is Aug. 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come out and help with the installation..
