Getting a small business or organization into the world of social media was the subject of Wednesday’s Lunch and Learn at the Oskaloosa Public Library.
Library Director William Ottens, who helps manage the library’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, provided those in attendance with insight into the world of social media. Ottens’ experience includes 3 to 4 years contributing to social media outlets for libraries. He also used social media for a coffee shop in Lawrence, Kan., for about a year and a half while interning there.
It’s important to familiarize yourself with your territory when using social media for a business, according to Ottens. It’s also important to develop a social media strategy, he said. Part of this is to make those you interact with via social media know that there is a human being behind each post made by a business.
Ottens also pointed to the importance of posting photos and asking questions using a business’ social media pages.
He said it’s also important to interact with different brands via social media. Ottens pointed to the fact that a Facebook page for a business can “like” other businesses.
Ottens said it is important for a business to respond to Facebook comments — especially the negative ones. Of course, being respectful is key in this situation.
The growth among the Oskaloosa Public Library’s social media pages was also discussed by Ottens. He also noted the regular posting schedule used on the library’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
The particulars of managing a business’ Facebook page, as well as how to schedule posts were among the other topics discussed by Ottens at Wednesday’s Lunch and Learn.
