OSKALOOSA — Officers arrested an Ottumwa man after a brief pursuit ended in a crash last week.

Zachary Lynn Shafer, 23, of Ottumwa, was charged with possession of controlled substance, a class D felony; possession of a firearm by felon, a class D felony; eluding, a serious misdemeanor; and OWI, a serious misdemeanor; as well as multiple traffic violations.

He was released after posting bond.

In court filings, police say they attempted to stop a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze that was speeding at 2:39 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27. The driver, who they identified as Shafer, fled at speeds of 70 miles per hour.

During the short pursuit, police said Shafer failed to stop at a stop sign before proceeding on A Avenue, then turning onto Gateway Drive. The vehicle would ultimately go off the road on Third Avenue and crashed into a fence, police said.

The driver left the vehicle and ran westbound on foot. He was later located by officers in a creek bed about a half-mile from the crash scene, according to court filings.
