OSKALOOSA — An adult male is in serious condition after he became trapped under a vehicle in rural Mahaska County on Wednesday.
At approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, Mahaska Health Ambulance Service and Oskaloosa Fire Department were dispatched to the 2000 block of Suffolk Road in rural Mahaska County after receiving a call regarding a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office.
Upon arrival, deputies found 80-year-old Alvern Boetsma, of Oskaloosa, trapped underneath a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer in the roadway. Deputies were able to remove the vehicle off Boetsma to perform life-saving measures. Boetsma was transported to Mahaska Health and later life-flighted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines in serious condition, the release says.
The driver of the car has been identified as 36-year-old Jennifer Allen of Oskaloosa, according to the release. A preliminary investigation into the incident indicates the car driven by Allen backed from a private driveway into the roadway, striking Boetsma, who was walking in the roadway, deputies say. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, Mahaska Health Ambulance Service and Oskaloosa Fire Department were assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and Oskaloosa Police Department.
