OSKALOOSA — Members of the Oskaloosa School Board approved Tuesday a proposal from Oskaloosa High School to ditch the block schedule and go to a daily seven period schedule.

The change will allow for an additional minute for each passing period and four extra minutes in each class period.

The new schedule will also eliminate Pride Hour and add after school tutoring options. The removal of Pride Hour will allow for additional class and homeroom time to replace the "downtown" created by Pride Hour.

Currently, the school sees a 17.5% absent rate for the Pride Hour Period.

"It's not serving the purpose that was intended when it was put into our schedule," OHS Principal Jeff Kirby said.

A staff survey showed that 87.2% of staff are in favor of the change, while 12.8% preferred to keep the modified block schedule.

The change will be implemented for the third trimester of this school year.

In other matters, the board:

  • approved submitting a $675,000 request to the School Budget Review Committee to reach the Dropout Prevention budget of $951,209. The additional 25% will be considered a “local match”;
  • approved course changes for OHS Spanish courses to include more rigor in Spanish 4 and add additional advanced Spanish courses.
