MAHASKA COUNTY — A female inmate of the Mahaska County Jail is in critical condition after being found hanging in her jail cell.

According to a press release from the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office, at around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, Krystal Lynn Doud of Searsboro, Iowa, was found hanging in her cell. Jailers cut the inmate down from her hanging position and immediately started lifesaving measures on her.

Doud was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines and is listed in critical condition. Doud was being held in jail for forgery, identity theft, various drug charges and parole violation.

The jail was assisted by members of the Oskaloosa Police Department, the Mahaska County Conservation Board and the Mahaska County Dispatch Center during the initial incident.

The matter is under investigation and the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office is being assisted by the Division of Criminal Investigation.
