OSKALOOSA — The Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter Annual K-9 5K is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at Lacey Complex.

This fundraising run/walk for homeless animals helps the shelter care for the hundreds of homeless animals that come through their doors every year.

In addition to taking in and re-homing stray, abandoned, abused, and otherwise homeless animals, the shelter, in partnership with the Mahaska Humane Society, has developed programs aimed to educate the community and promote responsible pet ownership.

The shelter currently houses 14 dogs and approximately 30 cats that are all available for adoption.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go to pay for the shelter’s spaying and neutering expenses, medicines, food and litter.

As an individual participant, your $25 registration fee includes registration for your choice of the 5K route or one mile route and an event t-shirt.

Couples can register for $40 per couple and families can register for $20 per adult and $15 per child. Registration fees include your choice of a timed 5K route or one mile route and event t-shirts for each participant.

If you are not able to attend but still want to contribute, you can register as a cat-napper for $20 and receive an event t-shirt.

Pre-registration is accepted up until Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. Participants can register on event day, but they may not have your t-shirt size in stock. If this is the case, they can order a t-shirt for you and contact you when it’s ready for pick-up.

Check-in for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. The 5K race begins at 10 a.m. and the one mile run/walk will begin shortly after the 5K.

There will also be activities for the whole family throughout the morning, and special activities for children during the race as they wait for family members who are running or walking to complete the course.
