Masterful minis compete for Iowa State Fair honors

DES MOINES — Mini masterpieces took the stage in the Dollhouses and Miniature Rooms competition judged prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Marilyn A. Ekle of Farmington won Best of Show in the Doll House division, and Beth Grabau of Adel grabbed Best of Show in the Miniature Rooms or Scenes division.

Lookalikes and copycats have state fair crowd seeing double

DES MOINES — Fairgoers and judges saw double (and triple) at the annual Twins, Triplets and More contest judged Thursday on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage at the 2019 Iowa State Fair. This contest judges twins and triplets of all ages on the most and least alike pairs.

Creativity reigns supreme in state fair coloring contest

DES MOINES — The coloring skills of artists from across the Midwest were put to the test in the Coloring Contest, judged Wednesday, August 7, prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Horseshoe heroes on the first day of the fair

DES MOINES — Participants from across Iowa competed in the Open Singles and Farmers’ Championship divisions of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament held Thursday at the 2019 Iowa State Fair. The Fair hosts both Championship and Open Class competitions every Fair day. Division winners are crowned daily. All Horseshoe Pitching competitions take place on the clay courts just east of Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.

FFA photographers claim honors at state fair

DES MOINES — There were 409 exhibitors that entered 1,181 exhibits in the photography contest judged Wednesday prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Skylar Bloom of DeWitt received Best of Show honors, while Jill Wallace secured the Reserve Best of Show title.

Iowans receive high honors in state fair fine arts competition

DES MOINES — The top artists from across the country put their skills to the test at the Fine Arts competition judged prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

The judge’s panel evaluated more than 650 pieces of art. Of those, only 338 were accepted into the art show. These entries will be on display throughout the Fair on the third floor of the Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every Fair day.

Jody Valentine of West Des Moines won Best of Show in the adult division.

Professional and amateur decorators take the cake

DES MOINES — Top professional and amateur cake decorators vied for top honors in the Cake Decorating competition at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Nanette Catigbe of Fort Dodge and Jenny Slight of Des Moines tied for the Sweepstakes title.

Entries were judged on execution, difficulty, appearance, neatness, originality, design, edible applications and use of color.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 166 divisions, 715 classes and over 7,300 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

DES MOINES — The Apiary competition brought out the buzz among competitors when it was judged prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

All exhibitor entries were products of the exhibitor’s apiary unless otherwise specified. Entries will be on display throughout the Fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the John Deere Agriculture Building sponsored by Alliant Energy.

FFA breeding swine compete for banners

DES MOINES — Youth from across the state competed in the FFA Breeding Swine Show on Thursday at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Trey Lettow of Woodward captured the Supreme Champion Commercial Gilt title while Bradi Bohlke of Kingsley claimed the Supreme Reserve Champion Commercial Gilt title.
