DES MOINES — Five wines made from Iowa-grown grapes won Double Gold awards in the Iowa State Fair Commercial Wine competition judged prior to the start of the 2019 Fair.

This year, 11 outstanding wines were nominated for the Best of Show competition. Covered Bridges Winery won the Best of Show Red with Rattlesnake Red. Snus Hill Vineyard and Winery won Best of Show White with Cat Nip. Best of Show Fruit was awarded to Ackerman Winery with Red Raspberry and the Eagles Landing Winery was awarded Best of Show Other with Volga Lake Blush.

To achieve the honor of Double Gold status, the wine must be awarded gold by all judges. The competition uses an awards system based on how the wine should be shared. A Gold award means the wine is one you would be "proud to take to a dinner or party." A Silver award denotes a wine that you would be "proud to serve to friends in your home," while a Bronze award signifies a wine that a person "will enjoy drinking at home." The judges selected winners through a blind taste test of 144 wines entered by 28 Iowa wineries. 93 wines were given awards.

All four of the Best of Show award-winning wines will be available at Grandfather's Barn each day of the Fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Samples are $1 each or six for $5. Bottles of State Fair White and State Fair Red wines will be available for $15.
