OSKALOOSA — For many, the holiday season really kicks off after Thanksgiving.

Whether Mahaska County residents want to answer the siren call of shopping or spend extra time outside of the house with family, there’s lots to do in the coming days.

Many local merchants are offering discounts and deals over the weekend. Small business Saturday is Nov. 30.

Santa visits Oskaloosa

Friday, Nov. 29

Noon–2 p.m., Santa will be making his first visit of the season to Penn Central Mall. Santa’s village opens, with some fun photo ops.

Feeling craftySaturday, Nov. 30

A Christmas Spirit craft fair will be held at Debbie’s Celebration Barn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A holiday craft and vendor show will be at Penn Central Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Family fun

Saturday, Nov. 30

11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Grab the family and head to the mall for the VFW and VFW Auxiliary Holly Jolly Family Fun Fest. The event is free. There will be crafts and games for all ages and prizes to be won. Santa will be present from noon to 2 p.m.

Let’s read a story

Saturday, Nov. 30

11 a.m.–1 p.m., ‘Greubie and the Cats’ authors Dan and Mary Nance will be at Book Vault. The children’s story is based on the Nance’s real-life dog.

Crowning

Monday, Dec. 2

6–7 p.m., The Young Ambassadors Prince and Princess will be crowned at Penn Central Mall. Make those votes count in the meantime.

Wreathed in delight

Monday, Dec. 2

6-8 p.m., Make a fresh front door wreath with the Mahaska County Master Gardeners. There is a $15 per wreath, for materials. Fresh boughs of white pine, Norway spruce and balsam fir. Attendees should pre-register for the event by noon on Nov. 27 by calling 641-673-5841. Attendees are encouraged to bring unusual greens, pine cones, fruits and other assorted decorations and tools.

Tuesday, Dec. 3

6–8 p.m., Every Tuesday from Dec. 3 to Christmas is “Train Tuesday” at Penn Central Mall. Children can enjoy free train rides around Penn Central Mall.

This house is a treat

Thursday, Dec. 5

All day. Vote for your favorite gingerbread house at Penn Central Mall. Each vote is $1, with the proceeds going to Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity. To enter the contest, bring your gingerbread house to the mall on Dec. 5 between 10 and 11 a.m. and fill out a form.

Festival of Trees

Thursday Dec. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 7.

5–7 p.m., Enjoy the holiday market and check out the trees decorated by local businesses and individuals. A gospel Christmas concert will be held from 6–8 p.m.Welcome to our home

Saturday, Dec. 7

1–6 p.m., Local families open their homes for the community to tour. The holiday tour of homes will visit Lindsey and Brett Herney, Susan and John Sterns, Tim and Lori McIntire, Jody and Jeff Mitrisin. Homestead Assisted Living has been designated as a host and will serve coffee and cookies, and a display of decorated trees. Proceeds benefit Youth for Christ. The tour continues Sunday, Dec. 8 from 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance.

Let’s go for a ride

Saturday, Dec. 7

4–6 p.m., Take a horse-drawn wagon ride around the square. From 5–6 p.m., enjoy a concert in center court of Penn Central Mall.

Light up the town

Saturday, Dec. 7

7–10 p.m., Oskaloosa’s famous Lighted Christmas Parade starts at 7 p.m., with more activities in Penn Central Mall.
