NEW SHARON — A Friday evening fire destroyed a single-story home in Northern Mahaska County.

At 8:16 p.m. Friday, the New Sharon Fire Department was called to the 1400 block of Merino Avenue for a residential fire. When they arrived, crews found a single-structure residence roughly 50 percent engulfed in fire.

The fire department confirmed all residents were out of the home and safe. It took crews 3.5 hours to extinguish the blaze, but the residence was a total loss.

One firefighter was treated and released for minor injuries sustained while fighting the blaze.

There were 31 firefighters that responded to the scene from New Sharon Fire Department, with assistance from nearby departments in Oskaloosa and Barnes City. Also assisting were the New Sharon Police Department, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, Mahaska County Emergency Management and the Mahaska County E911 dispatch center.
