OSKALOOSA — For the fourth year, individuals’ journeys of recovery will be celebrated.
Celebrate Recovery is led this year by Bethesda House pastor Jeremy Empie. The event will be 4–6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17.
“Overcoming an addiction or disorder related to alcohol, food, drugs or eating; as well as your emotional and mental health deserves to be celebrated,” he said. “We want to honor you as your journey is just beginning, you have 40 years sober, or even if you need help starting.”
Recovery, Empie said, is often overlooked or even frowned upon.
“I want to change that in Oskaloosa.”
There are many types of addictions people face, Empie said, including smoking, drugs, eating, gambling, sex and video games.
It is important, Empie said, for people to celebrate their recoveries and glean encouragement and knowledge from one another.
Empie said he himself was addicted to pornography and alcohol in 2009.
“God completely set me free,” he said. “Now my wife and I pastor a church – Bethesda House – that ministers to people that battle addiction.”
Celebrate Recovery will be held 4–6 p.m. at the Oskaloosa square. If there is inclement weather, it will move to Penn Central Mall’s center court.
Empie said community members should come learn about addiction, encourage others, enjoy free food and meet new friends. Community organizations will also have booths for people to visit.
