POWESHIEK – An Oskaloosa woman is dead after a three car accident on Highway 21 in Poweshiek County on Tuesday morning.
The crash happened in the 4700 block of Highway 21 shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, involving two cars and a Peterbilt semi truck.
According to authorities, Matthew Morgan, of West Des Moines, was driving northbound in his car when he crossed the center line. Semi truck driver Richard Mortensen, of Grinnell, driving southbound swerved right attempting to avoid the accident, but was unsuccessful.
Morgan’s car collided with the front of Mortensen’s semi truck before coming to rest on the east shoulder of the road. The semi truck spun sideways across both lanes of the highway hitting a Nissan Rogue driven by Teresa VanZee in the northbound lane. Both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch.
VanZee was pronounced dead on the scene. Morgan and Mortensen were both taken to the hospital by ambulance to have their injuries assessed.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation with the Iowa State Patrol, Poweshiek County Sheriffs Office and the Poweshiek First Responders.
