OSKALOOSA — Johnny Lynn Dale, Jr., a Sigourney man charged with killing his girlfriend's 4-month-old child, has filed a plea of not guilty.

On June 16, Oskaloosa Police Officers were called to Mahaska Health Partnership in response to suspected child abuse.

According to court documents, Dale had been the child's primary caregiver on June 15 while the child's mother worked. When the mother returned home, the child had a bruised forehead and would not wake up.

Dale told investigators he had been frustrated with the baby during the night. According to court documents, Dale said he "bounced" the baby on an air mattress in an attempt to get the baby to sleep.

The child suffered severe brain and spinal cord injuries.

Dale was charged with first degree murder and is being held in the Mahaska County jail with a $1,000,000 cash only bail.

His trial is scheduled for Nov. 19, 2019.
