OSKALOOSA — It's shaping up to be a hot, sunny weekend in Oskaloosa, with lots of fun things to enjoy outside.


Oskaloosa High School

The Oskaloosa High School Alumni Reunion will be enjoying activities at the Oskaloosa square throughout the weekend. Activities include attending Art on the Square and Friday after Five on Friday, June 7. A bags tournament will be held during Friday after Five. Funds raised will go to the 52577 scholarship fund.

On Saturday, June 8, a four-person best ball golf scramble will be held at Oskaloosa Golf and Edmundson Golf Course. Again, funds raised will be donated to the 52577 scholarship fund. 9:30 a.m. sign-in at Oskaloosa Golf; 1:30 p.m. at Edmundson.

Jefferson Elementary School reunion

Visitors are invited to come to New Hope Community center, located at the former Jefferson Elementary School at 308 Fifth Ave. W.

On Friday, June 7, school tours will be held at noon and 2 p.m., a cooking demonstration by Wood Iron Grille. Throughout the afternoon will be oldies music, a bake sale and silent auction.

Saturday, June 8 includes the school tours, a show by Tom Terrific from 2–5 p.m., dinner from 5–6 p.m., live music and a live auction starting at 6:30.

Kids' fishing derby and family fishing

Noon–3 p.m., No fishing license is needed just for this weekend in Iowa. There will be a free fishing event for kids and their family will be held at Russell Wildlife Area. A picnic will kick things off. Hot dogs will be cooked, please bring a drink and side dish to share.

At 1 p.m., hike to the nearby pond and go fishing. For those 18 and younger, awards will be given for both the largest and smallest fish during the event.

Bring your own fishing pole or borrow one from Mahaska County Conservation Board. Bait will be provided.

Russell Wildlife Area is located at 2254 200th St., which is four miles north of Oskaloosa on Hwy. 63 and then east on 200th St.

Friday after Five

6–9:30 p.m., The first Friday after Five of the season kicks off. Small Town Superheroes and Rock Bottom will be performing

Art on the Square

The 51st annual art on the square will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 7. The event is one of Iowa's longest-running art shows, filled with local artists. There will be shopping, food, live music and more. Art on the Square continues on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Knots, Loops and other Twisted Crafts

Visit Nelson Pioneer Farm for this free event and check out historic textile crafts in action. Artisans and demonstrators will show off historic and modern fiber crafts, including rope making, chair caning, crocheting and knitting, quilting and spinning. Try your hand at crafts and participate in a site-wide scavenger hunt.

Oskaloosa Vendors and Farmers Market

8–11 a.m., The market will be held in its new location, Penn Central Mall's northwest parking lot, near the urban skate park.

William Penn University professor and author Jared Pearce will hold a poetry reading and book signing at The Book Vault
