OSKALOOSA — Oskaloosa Elementary School sent two six-member teams to compete in the Great Prairie Area Education Agency Battle of the Books competition at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center on April 8.

The team members read and studied 30 different books to prepare for the contest. Ella Walter, Cora Snakenberg, Morgan Nance, Liberty Mowrer, Easton Roe, and Emily Medina made up team “I’d Rather be Reading.”

Conner Smith, Casey Hol, Brenna Deffenbaugh, Abigail Dahlke, Lilia Morris, and Dev Dholakia made up team “I Read Past My Bedtime.”

The Osky Elementary Battle of The Books teams were coached by teacher librarian Liz Good and talented and gifted teacher Kim Prendergast.

Teams were allowed one hour to complete a 60-question, short answer test.

While the tests were being scored, students enjoyed a presentation by Iowa author, Sarah Prineas.

Students were able to purchase books by the author and have them autographed.

Five teams, including, Osky’s team “I’d Rather be Reading” qualified to advance to the oral round, where “I’d Rather be Reading” took second place overall out of 25 teams.
