EDDYVILLE — The Knoxville Panthers swept through a wrestling quadrangular at Eddyville Thursday night and in the process nailed down a pair of South Central Conference wins. The Panthers had little trouble in disposing of the Clarke Indians 48-27 and then used strong effort by their lighter weights to get past the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rockets 48-35.

In the dual with Clarke, the Panthers used six forfeits and a pin by Luke Spaur along with decisions by Marco Alejo and Tristan Sinnard to easily outdistance the Indians.

The EBF dual began a 106 pounds and the Panthers used a pair of forfeits and pins by Steven Thome, Sinnard and Spaur to rip off a quick 30-0 lead and then they held off a fast closing EBF rally to gain a big SCC win. The Panthers also received pins for Chaz Graves, Kale Kincaid and Tristian De Jong.

The dual with Central Decatur was nearly a no contest as the Panthers used nine Cardinal forfeits and pins from Graves and Gavin Montalvo to post an easy win.

Knoxville Assistant Coach Jesse Westphal, filling in for Skyler Spaur who was ill, was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We wanted to make a statement tonight,” Westphal said. “We did that, but we still have lots of room for improvement. We have some big conference meets ahead of us. A dual with EBF is one that we get excited about. It is good competition and a fun dual. It is always good to come out on top in that dual.”

The Rockets rallied from a 48-6 deficit in the dual with Knoxville with a strong showing in the upper weights, but the hole was too deep to crawl out of. The Rockets finished the match with pins from Hunter McFadden, Blake Jager, Braxton Malloy, Stryker Lettington and a forfeit handed to Skyler Young.

In the dual with Clarke, the Rockets used five forfeits and pin from Young and McFadden to coast to the win. Tyler Schutt and Wiatt Mc Gatchey added decisions to the EBF total score. In the Central Decatur dual the Rockets used seven forfeits and pins by Harrison Kargol, Cayne Hall and Malloy to bury the Cardinals 60-6.

The Rockets are 5-1 in duals and 1-1 in the SCC. Rocket Coach Scott Wiliamson is liking what he sees from his upper weights.

“We are pretty solid in the upper end of our lineup,” Williamson said. “I like how they are preforming and we will get better. We need to get better at the lower weights. Giving up forfeits and pins hurt us. We will be working hard to improve in that area.”

EBF will host a five team dual tourney on Thursday with Atlantic, Des Moines East, Mediapolis and Waukee joining the Rockets. Knoxville is at the Roland-Story tourney this weekend and will be at Ballard on Tuesday.
