DES MOINES — Knoxville halted their 11-game losing streak on Friday as they traveled to Des Moines and left with a 24-14 victory over Saydel for their first win of the season.
The Panthers had a great first quarter where they found the end zone three times to jump in front 21-0. Saydel would start to crawl back into the game in the next two quarters and eventually were within a touchdown at 21-14 before a John Buttell 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter would give them some cushion on their way to the victory.
Knoxville was led by their ground attack where they rushed for 194 yards on 39 attempts (5 yards per carry). Gavin Montalvo led the way with 59 yards on 11 carries with Hayden Jones finding the end zone twice and Michael Greubel also punching in a short TD run for the Panthers in the first quarter.
Noah Keefer was 3-of-8 passing for 45 yards with one interception while Jay Kellar caught a pair of passes for 39 yards.
Sophomore Tyce Huyck would lead the young Panther defense with nine tackles. Knoxville was active against Saydel’s passing game, holding quarterback Judd Roberts to 8-of-24 with three interceptions. Cole Carter grabbed two while Hayden Willoughby also nabbed an interception.
Knoxville (1-5, 1-1) will remain on the road as they try to keep their momentum going when they travel to Atlantic (1-5, 0-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.
