Pella runs in Heartland Classic

PELLA — Some of the top cross country runners in the state and bordering states made their way to the Central College cross country course on Saturday for Pella’s 16th Annual Heartland Classic. Over 1,000 athletes from 43 different schools showed up for the event including Pella.

The Pella girls finished 24th with a score of 617 among 33 schools recording a team score. Des Moines Roosevelt won with 129 points while Sydney Drevolw of Hopkins, Minn. won at 18:03.

Raegan Snieder paced the Lady Dutch by taking 29th with a time of 20:00. Autumn Blink (74th, 21:05), Jacie Trine (158th, 22:30), Macy Schroeder (182nd, 23:25), Abigail Teagarden (198th, 23:56), Emily McMartin (203rd, 24:10) and Sophia Boonstra (24:14) rounded out the Pella lineup.

The Dutch boys took 20th with 526 points among the 42 schools while Millard West, Neb. won with 65 points. Dubuque Hempstead’s Derek Leicht won the race with a time of 15:37.

Chase Lauman would lead the Pella boys by taking 30th with his time of 16:33 while Josiah Wittenberg also showed well with his 57th place finish at 16:53. The rest of the Pella lineup included Kaiden Browne (121st, 17:45), Akira Lopez (156th, 18:05), Jake Huston (168th, 18:13), Aren Hellbusch (207th, 18:53) and Cutler Turner (217th, 19:05).

Pella heads to Newton on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

Pella goes 2-2 at Ballard Invitational

HUXLEY — No. 11 (4A) Pella split their four games at the Ballard Invitational on Saturday, defeating Ballard 2-0 (21-13, 21-12) and Grand View Christian 2-0 (21-11, 21-12) before facing a couple of tough ranked teams to finish the day.

The Lady Dutch would fall in hard-fought three-setters to No. 3 (3A) Des Moines Christian (16-21, 21-11, 15-10) and No. 10 (5A) Johnston (21-15, 17-21, 15-13).

No. 11 (4A) Pella (14-5, 2-1 LHC) returns to conference play on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. for a big showdown against No. 4 (4A) Oskaloosa (16-3, 3-0 LHC).

Panthers go 3-2 at B-F, Keitges earns career win No. 100

BONDURANT — The Panthers of Knoxville traveled to the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational on Saturday, going 3-2 on the day which would give head coach Mollie Keitges her 100th career coaching win.

Knoxville grabbed 2-1 wins over Lewis Central (21-19, 18-21, 22-20) and Dallas Center-Grimes (21-17, 15-21, 15-10) while also picking up a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) sweep of Atlantic. The Panthers would later fall 2-0 to No. 7 (5A) Cedar Rapids Kennedy (21-16, 21-11) and No. 7 (4A) Bondurant-Farrar (21-13, 25-23).

Brittany Bacorn led Knoxville on the day with 26 kills, 42 assists, 45 digs and eight aces in those five matches. Abby Wadle added 19 kills on offense while Hannah Dunkin finished with 26 assists.

Defensively, Charlee Hefron had four blocks on the day including three alone against DCG. Emma Dunkin would lead Knoxville with 54 digs.

Knoxville (11-8, 0-3 SCC) will go to Clarke (2-12, 0-2 SCC) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
