North Mahaska triumphs in doubleheader against HLV

NEW SHARON —

North Mahaska picked up critical wins in a hot South Iowa Cedar League contest against HLV team winning 11-7 in game one and 10-2 in game two.
Both teams entered the games with identical 7-3 records. North Mahaska moves to third in the conference while HLV falls to fourth.
Nicole Brand pitched a complete game and continued to prove why she is North Mahaska’s ace pitcher.  She recorded four strikeouts but her teammates did the real damage to opposing pitcher Kendra Schafbuch.
“She was solid tonight,” said North Mahaska coach Chris Sampson. “She was hitting spots and keeping them off balanced. They had the one home run but shouldn’t have happen. Other than that, she was very solid tonight.”
NM collected 16 hits in the contest and was in control for most of the game. The Warhawks had a 5-1 leading going to the top of the third and Brand had only surrendered two hits. North Mahaska’s Katie Koehler had a solid game going 4-for-4 with three RBI and hitting a double.
That’s when the Warriors of HLV exploded for five runs in the inning capped by a three-run home run by Lauren Cavin. Brooke Kuesel reached first base after an error. Sampson called a timeout to talk and calm the team down.
“I think it was a lack of focus that inning,” said Sampson.  “We just relaxed a little bit instead of focusing on each pitch. They flushed it and moved forward.
Kuesel stole second and third but was left stranded with strikeout and a routine short-to-first base play. Despite a one run deficit, the Warhawks responded with two runs in bottom of the fourth.
With State Farm agent Phil Griffen at the microphone announcing the game, the Warhawks decided to invest in some insurance runs and took a 11-6 advantage going to the seventh.
