Tyler Smith misses out on playing in U.S. Open

OSKALOOSA —

Former Oskaloosa High School golfer Tyler Smith played in a U.S. Open sectional qualifying tournament Monday at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn.
Smith, an amateur who currently plays at a Grand View University on Des Moines, shot a 1-under 70 on the North course. He had a round of 75 on the South course to finish at 5-over 145, failing to qualify for the U.S. Open.
His uncle, Jerry Smith, who recently played in the Principal Charity Classic last weekend, qualified for the 1988, 1993, 2005 and 2010 U.S. Opens during his career. He missed the cut all four times.
