The Little Hawkeye Conference Wrestling Tournment had a slightly different format than in past years on Saturday.
With only six teams participating, the tournament was a round-robin affair with each wrestler meeting the other wrestlers once.
Oskaloosa had two conference champions and four runners-up as the Indians finsihed fourth with 203 points. Grinnell, which won the dual-meet portion of the conference earlier this week, completed the double-title run with 257 points, just 6.5 points betetr than Newton.
The Indians were in fifth place most of the day, but put on a rally in the final couple of rounds to move up a spot, which pleased Coach Brandon Graham.
“We did pretty well,” he said. “We had several individuals who did really well. We changed a couple of matches that could have gone either way. In the team race, we should have been in the top three. But we’re happy with fourth.
“Everybody wrestled hard and never gave up.”
Sophomore Skylar DeJong only wrestled three times after getting byes in the first two rounds, but he made very quick work of his opponents to claim the title at 113 pounds.
He was on the mat for all of a minute and 9 seconds in recording three quick falls to move his record to 32-4.
Senior Dane Jones improved his record to 23-2 with three pins in just over a minute and a major decision in his other win as he went 4-0 on the day at 195.
“Skylar and Dane wrestled really well,” Graham said. “We expect that out of those two. We’re trying to push them ready for Thursday night (at Pella along with future LHC member Dallas Center-Grimes) and hopefully get a hard week of trining in before districts (Feb. 9 in Mount Pleasant).”
Getting second-place finishes were Nate Caves at 120, Cody Jones at 160, Mason Wisse at 182 and Drea Lamb at 220.
