CENTERVILLE — The start of the 2012 season for Oskaloosa and Centerville was ragged as both teams had trouble getting any shots to either fall or even get off a shot attempt.

The Indians scored the first six points of the game and never looked back as they won the season opener 61-30 against a depleted Redette team.

Centerville suspended four players for disciplinary reasons and had trouble meshing throughout the game.

The Redettes had 22 of their 26 turnovers in the first half and didn’t have anyone score in double figures.

Oskaloosa scored its first points of the season on a Taylor Richardson field goal at the 6:19 mark of the opening quarter. A basket by Allie Christenson and an offensive rebound hoop by Taylor Crawford gave the Indians a 6-0 edge before Alyssa Barger’s basket with 4:19 to go in the period gave Centerville its first points of the game.

Over the next three minutes, Oskaloosa extended the lead to 21-2 with Crawford, Christenson, Richardson, Kate Hasselman, Kena Veldhuizen and Chace Moyer all contributing points in the run.

“We wanted to play fast and Centerville made us play even a little faster, the way we wanted to,” Oskaloosa coach Steve Kaisand said. “After we got settled down and making good reads, we executed a lot better in the second half.

“The girls came out tremendously hard tonight and it’s always nice to get that first win.”

The Indians had a 20-point lead after the first quarter and increased it to 30 before a 3-pointer by MaKenna Pershy with 2:46 remaining in the half halted the scoring drought for Centerville.

The Redettes scored the first basket of the second half and stayed with the Indians for much of the third quarter, being outscored by only four points in the period. but still trailed by 30 going to the final quarter of play.

Midway in the third quarter, the mercy rule went into effect and the teams had just 15 points in the final period.

Oskaloosa is off until Monday when it plays Fairfield in the home opener.
