Junior Trent Roose of North Mahaska outdueled senior Tanner DeBrower of HLV Wednesday to capture a 7-4 South Iowa Cedar League baseball win.
Each pitcher sruck out nine, but it was free passes by DeBrower and timely hits by the Warhawks that spelled the difference.
Roose scored the first run of the game after an issued walk by DeBrower. After a stolen base, he scored on Taylor Legvold’s single in the first inning.
HLV (5-17, 4-15) took the lead in the third taking advantage of two singles, Roose’s only walk of the game, and two Warhawk errors. Nate Van Buren and Dakota Stults hit back-to-back singles with one out in the inning. After a flyout, Roose issued the walk then errors on consecutive plays allowed four runs to score.
North Mahaska (20-6, 16-3) answered with a run in the bottom of the third then tallied three more in the fourth. The big blow came on a bases-loaded triple by junior Brock Pollpeter. The Warhawks added an insurance run in the sixth.
DeBrower walked the first two batters in the sixth then gave way to Matt Maschmann in relief.
North Mahaska coach Kevin Kelderman was pleased with the win despite the miscues.
“We got stuff when we needed it,” said Kelderman. “We didn’t play defense. This probably should have been a six to nothing ball game. In the end we scored more than they did.”
Roose issued just one walk and limited the Warriors to three hits.
“Trent did a nice job, but we have to come together more as a team and not rely on him so much. He really got us out of some situations. Obviously he was the glue that held us together because we weren’t helping him out early on,” Kelderman said
Roose was able to shut down the Warrior offense striking out the side in the fourth and retiring the team in order in the final two frames. An error in the fifth allowed the final HLV batter to reach base.
North Mahaska winds up the regular season next week with three home contests. They face a conference foe Montezuma in a makeup game Monday, and then Moravia comes to town for a tilt on Tuesday. North Mahaska closes out the regular season campaign with a home contest against Lone Tree on Thursday.
