Late first-half run spurs PC cagers past Osky

OSKALOOSA —

Things were looking good for Oskaloosa in its Little Hawkeye Conference encounter with Pella Christian Tuesday night.
That is until the final 3:18 of the first half.
The Indians (0-3) tied the game at 21 at that juncture on a pair of Ryan Reiter free throws.
Then the Eagles (3-2) closed out the half on a 12-2 run en route to the 68-47 victory.
Pella Christian made good on all eight of its free-throw opportunities — four from Sebastian Baugh and two each from Josh Posthuma and Nate Haveman — while adding buckets from Baugh and Coltin Collins to take a 33-23 lead into halftime.
“That was a big run,” Pella Christian coach Larry Hessing said. “The game was back-and-forth and to push it out to 10 right at halftime was a psychological advantage. It was like, ‘OK, we’ve got this under control’ and from their perspective, ‘Shoot, they’re getting away from us.’”
“They went on a 12-0 run before we got a bucket,” Oskaloosa coach Zach Tremmel said. “We can’t let teams go on those runs like that. We’re not good enough to make up for that. We’ve got to play better defense and we had some bunnies (easy shots) in that stretch that we missed. If we made those, it’s still a game.
“We came out in the third with some energy, but we couldn’t defend anybody. We were clicking offensively, but we couldn’t stop them.”
Pella Christian had three 3-pointers in the third quarter as Baugh, Jason Holwerda and Jared Van Wyk doing the honors with Van Wyk’s 3-ball giving the Eagles a 53-36 cushion late in the quarter.
One key to the game was the ability of Pella Christian adjusting to Oskaloosa’s Ryan Reiter in the second half.
Reiter poured in a game-high 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, but only managed six points in the second half to allow the Eagles gain control of the game.
