Two school marks set at Last Chance Meet

WAVERLY — While no new individuals qualified for nationals, several had strong performances in their final tune-up at the Wartburg Invitational Saturday.

Competing with very limited squads, the Statesmen were fifth out of seven teams with 21 points, while the women were last in the six-team standings. Wartburg dominated both sides with 300 points in the women’s race and 237 in the men’s.

Sam Taylor led the Statesmen by breaking his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a second-place finish of 8.51 seconds.

Meaghan Foster matched Taylor by tying her school record in the shot put with a toss of 42-3.25. The freshman was sixth in that event and was also sixth in the weight throw at 49-1.

Gabriel Green did not break or match a program mark, but he was the only William Penn athlete to win an event. The senior was first in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 22.50 seconds. He was second in the 60-meter dash prelims as well with a time of 7.10 seconds (did not compete in the finals).

Audre Harris was sixth in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.46 seconds, while Frederick Pannell was also sixth in the men’s triple jump at 42-2. Sade Myers rounded out the school’s performances by taking 12th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.32.

Five William Penn athletes will have the opportunity to compete against the NAIA’s best in two weeks as they have qualified in a total of seven events. On the men’s side, the qualifiers include Green (60-meter dash), Taylor (60-meter hurdles), Alex Edwards (600-meter run and 800-meter run), and Jalen Wilson (long jump). Foster is the lone women’s qualifier, doing so in the shot put and weight throw.
