After a slower-than-expected start, the Statesmen softball team has dropped a few positions as the NAIA released its first regular season coaches’ poll Tuesday.
William Penn (12-6) slipped from No. 22 to No. 25 with 105 points. The Statesmen are the only representatives from the Midwest Collegiate Conference in the top 25, while St. Ambrose is receiving six votes to be 42nd unofficially.
Concordia (Calif.) leads the NAIA with 560 points and five first-place votes. Cal State-San Marcos, the preseason No. 1, is a close second with 556 points and an NAIA-high eight first-place votes. Lee (Tenn.) is third with five first-place votes, while Rogers State (Okla.) is the biggest mover, going from unranked in the preseason to fourth with three first-place votes. Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) rounds out the top five.
With winter weather continuing to play havoc in Iowa, William Penn has been forced to go south for its next games. The Statesmen will travel to Kansas City, Mo., Sunday to meet Avila in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
