VanVeldhuizen, Landgrebe lead Indians to first win of season

Friday night's Class 3A, District 8 battle between Oskaloosa and Carlisle was a meeting of teams looking for their first win of the season.
Only the Indians were able to achieve that goal as the tandem of Andrew Landgrebe and Nate VanVeldhuizen carried Oskaloosa to a 40-27 win at Oskaloosa Stadium.
The victory was Oskaloosa head coach Mike Sterner's first as a varsity coach, who said the team has been winning all year long, just not on the scoreboard.
“We've been winning for several weeks, it just hasn't been showing up on the scoreboard,” he said. “I'm so proud of those kids. The work and the willingness for those kids to just suck it up and when bad things happen, they bounce back and respond how champions do. I continue to be proud of our kids and the way that they continue to play football and refocus when bad things happen. The scoreboard is the by-product of all the hard work they have put in.”
Landgrebe logged the ball 23 times for 192 yards and five touchdowns while VanVeldhuizen rushed for 110 yards and one score for the 1-2 Indians.
Oskaloosa, which is 1-0 in the district, got off to a 19-0 lead as Landgrebe had a pair of 1-yard TD plunges and a 27-yard scamper before the Wildcats cut into the lead in the second quarter.
A 16-yard run by Carlisle's Kichanh McMullen made it 19-7 before Landgrebe tallied his fourth TD of the game, this time from 70 yards out, for a 26-7 cushion midway in the period.
The Oskaloosa junior added his third touchdown plunge of a yard with 2:53 left for a 33-7 lead and the Indians apparently had the game in hand.
But the Wildcats gained a bit of momentum on the final play of the opening half as Noah Smith hauled in a 32-yard scoring strike from Jordan Pierce to pull Carlisle to within 33-14 at halftime.
