Oskaloosa almost was going to have a full load to competitors for this Saturday’s state cross country meet in Fort Dodge.
The Indians finished fourth in both divisions at a Class 3A state qualifying meet Thursday, but missed out by one spot of sending both teams to the state meet.
The fourth-place finishes were the best either team has recorded in school history.
They will, however, will have sophomore twins Skylar and Spencer DeJong along with freshman sister Sienna DeJong running individually at the state meet.
Skylar and Spencer DeJong finished 1-2, respectively while Sienna DeJong was second. Skylar DeJong wan 16:23.26 to win the event while Sepncer DeJong ran 16:31.27 to earn their second trips to the state meet.
Sienna DeJong clocked in at 15:19.62 to gain her spot in the state meet.
Bailey Blythe, who competed in last year’s state meet, came in 34th after being injured during the week.
”Bailey Blythe ran a gutsy race as she fought through an injury that occurred last week,” Oskaloosa coach Mike Comfort said. “I’m very pleased with both teams performances. Everyone ran extremely well and most ran their season best or close too it.
”It’s heartbreaking to finish just out of a state qualifying spot, but the kids ran well the entire season and really improved. I’m extremely proud of them.”
The Oskaloosa tandem of Tori Palmer and Lesley Roquet picked up top-20 finishes as Palmer ran 16:36.91 to come in 16th and Roquet recorded a time of 16:39.88 to place right behind in 17th.
Jared Boggess was 23rd in the time of 17:42.28 while Kamron VanHulzen was 34th in 18:10.06.
The state meet is Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course. The Class 3A girls race starts at noon while the boys will run at 12:30 p.m.
