Comets win Osky Volleyball Tourney

Indians competed well despite going winless on day

Although Oskaloosa’s volleyball team did not advance through pool play its tournament on Saturday, the Indians did play well enough to get that far.
The Indians (4-24) lost close matches to Ottumwa (23-21, 19-12, 14-16), Fairfield (13-21, 22-20, 4-15) and Gilbert (21-16, 18-21, 16-18) to be seeded seventh following pool play.
North Polk and seventh-ranked (Class 2A) Grundy Center did not lose a match during pool play and the semifinals to face each other in the final. The Comets would rally after dropping the first set 25-20 capture the title 25-20 and 16-14.
Oskaloosa coach Jennifer Comfort was pleased how well the team played despite not winning a match.
“We did everything we could, we just couldn’t pull off a victory,” she said. “To go three sets in three games in pool play, we went to our max and I don’t know how many of our games were within two points. The girls fought, we couldn’t close and couldn’t finish, but we did everything that we could besides get a victory.”
The Indians close out the home season with a match against Newton Tuesday.
It will be the final home appearance for seniors Emily Allee, Kailyn Risher, Kailey Scharff and Libby VanMersbergen.
