Staggs could see playing time as freshman receiver

By DUANE NOLLEN

IOWA CITY — Oskaloosa’s Steven Staggs will join his former Oskaloosa football teammate, Tyler Sash, this year as an Iowa Hawkeye.

Staggs, a 6-foot-2, 183-pound freshman wide receiver, was a preferred walk-on to the Hawkeye football team. Stagg’s jersey number is 83.

As per Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz’s policy from this past season, freshmen could not appear before the press on Hawkeye Football Media Day. However, wide receiver coach Erik Campbell and Sash took a little time to talk about Staggs.

Campbell said it’s too early to say if Staggs will redshirt this year or earn some playing time. He will know after preseason camp is over.

“I’m glad he’s on the team,” Campbell said of Staggs.

Sash said he’s happy to have a familiar face on the Hawkeye football squad.

“Anytime you can get a friend and teammate from high school on the squad .. it brings a sense of pride to Osky,” he said.

Since Sash is a defensive back and Staggs is a receiver, Sash is certain he’ll see his old teammate on the practice field.

“I’m sure we’ll run into each other,” Sash said.
