Statesmen use three-pointers to pull away for 85-60 win

The William Penn men’s basketball team lived behind the arc Saturday and the strategy worked well enough to come out on top with an 85-60 non-conference win over Crossroads (Minn.) as part of the William Penn Classic.
William Penn (8-4), which has now won eight in a row, overcame being outshot 41.4 percent to 39.2 percent. The Statesmen really struggled from the field in the first half, hitting only 26.3 percent of their tries, but still led 34-27 at the break.
The low-shooting clip was mostly due to William Penn heaving up so many shots from the perimeter. The Statesmen were 15-for-50 from three-point land with the 50 attempts setting a new school record.
Ahead by just nine early in the second half, the Statesmen went on a 16-5 run and never led by less than 20 again, eventually going up by as much as 33 points late.
William Penn forced Crossroads into 25 turnovers (17 committed by William Penn) which led to a 26-9 Statesmen edge in points off mistakes. The Statesmen outrebounded its foe 49-36, good for a 15-7 advantage in second-chance points.
Kelly Madison made nearly half of his team’s deep shots, finishing with 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting (7-for-14 3-PT).
Marc Wilson recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds in addition to four steals. He was 10-for-12 at the charity stripe.
Tyler Stahle reached double figures as well with 16 points, while Kevin Fay contributed nine points. Alec Schwab added six points in the win.
Blake Walker was kept off the scoreboard, but did plenty of damage distributing the ball, ending the game with nine assists. Mike Aldeman matched Wilson with four steals.
“I want to thank my assistant coaches and all the William Penn employees and staff who helped with all the games this weekend,” Penn coach John Henry said. “They took time away from their families on this holiday weekend to host these games.”
William Penn remains at home Wednesday to host Central in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
