PC boys end season with state tourney loss to Orabs

The Oskaloosa Herald

DES MOINES — In a game that saw plenty of lead changes, Pella Christian failed to hold a lead in the last 13 minutes of its Class 2A first-round state tournament game against No. 9 Sheldon at Wells Fargo Arena Tuesday.

The Orabs kept the Eagles at bay for much of the second half en route to the 63-57 win.

The win puts the 23-3 Orabs into Thursday’s semifinal against Carroll Kuemper Catholic, a 61-54 winner over third-ranked Nodaway Valley. The Eagles close the season at 20-5.

The lead changed had 20 times and was tied six times, but Pella Christian’s last lead came at 34-33 with 5:05 left in the third quarter on a layup by Austin Ver Meer.

Sheldon tied the game at 34 on a free throw by Matt Dykstra when Chris Balste made 1 of 2 foul shots at the 3:52 mark to put the Orabs on top for good at 35-34.

Baskets by Balster and Dykstra along with a free throw from Tom Brown extended the lead to 40-34 with 1:30 left in the third and the Eagles could not recover.

Look for complete details on the game in Thursday’s Herald.
