Pella notches two records, two titles at LHC meet

Osky shuttle hurdle boys team sets school record

OSKALOOSA —

Great weather greeted Little Hawkeye Conference tracksters Monday night when the teams gathered at Lacey Complex Stadium.
Pella girls notched two records and along with the boys team grabbed the team titles.
Pella girls set records in the sprint medley and the 1,600 relay while amassing 131 points. Norwalk was second with 117, Newton third with 112 and Oskaloosa was fourth with 98. On the boys’ side, Pella scored 168 points to outdistance second place Knoxville with 136. Oskaloosa grabbed fourth place with 68 points.
While it was a great night to run, teams are still trying to get into stride. Weather has not been conducive to athletes being able to be at their peak. Only two records fell on the evening.
“We don’t even know who we are,” said Oskaloosa boys’ coach Mike Sterner. “We are still trying to uncover who we are. We hope we are peaking when we go to districts a week from Thursday.”
Pella’s girls’ sprint medley team of Klaire Wisniewski, Lauren Manecke, Jessica Holterhaus and Mackenzie Gustafson, ran to a meet record 1 minute, 51.66 seconds breaking the old mark of 1:52.31.
The team’s second record came in the final event of the night when Kailyn Hackman, Larissa Downs, Makenna Bogaard and Mackenzie Gustafson, posted a 4:07.41. The old mark was set in 2007 with a 4:07.68.
Oskaloosa’s 400 and 800 relay teams of Jared Pace, Ki-Jana DeJong, Tyce Sarver and Drew Richmond won in 43.97 seconds and 1:33.43 respectively.
“We got personal bests in both of those relays,” said Sterner. “They have been very focused on their teamwork and their handoffs.”
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Max Johnson, Richmond, Sarver and DeJong set a school record while finishing second in 1:01.42. Senior Brandon Strasser had a personal best of 140-10.5
“I have to say how happy I am with Brandon Strasser,” said Sterner. “He threw a personal best of 140 feet. We also set a new school record in the shuttle hurdle.”
