The trio of Spencer DeJong, Skylar DeJong and Ryan Reiter brought home individual titles as the Oskaloosa boys track team finished fourth at the Panther Relays Saturday.
The Indians totaled 98.43 points and were less than 10 points behind team champion Pella, which had 117.86 points.
Spencer DeJong won the 3,200-meter run while Skylar DeJong ran to victory in the 1,600 and Reiter jumped to the win in the high jump.
“Saturday gave our boys a great opportunity to compete and improve upon their best,” Oskaloosa coach Mike Sterner said. “With very good competition, the team did not disappoint. We had a great and gutsy finish in the 4x400 by the foursome of Spencer Medlin, Dalton Bunnell, Spencer DeJong and Ki-Jana DeJong.
“The finish went to the wire and the coaches hope this is a sign of the grittiness of this track team for the season to come. Spencer Medlin continues to be our hidden gem as he finished second in the 400 and third in the 200 as well. Our team finished less than 10 points from winning the meet, and should provide motivation to see just how far we can go.”
Oskaloosa recorded four other runner-up finishes as Spencer DeJong was second in the 1,600 and Jared Boggess came in second in the 110 high hurdles. Also placing second were the shuttle hurdle and 4x400 relays.
The next two weeks will provide lots of chances to improve the team’s times. Next meet is Tuesday for the freshmen and sophomores as they travel to Ottumwa, and the whole team goes to Centerville Thursday then wrap up the week at “the granddaddy of em all,” The Osky Relays on Saturday.
