Hawks slip past North Mahaska

No. 4 Lynnville-Sully used three hits and two North Mahaska errors to earn a 7-4 South Iowa Cedar League softball win. The victory came in a make-up game that had been postponed twice.
The two teams played even for the most part, but the Hawks were able to take better advantage of miscues than North Mahaska could. Lynnville-Sully committed five errors, but only one run resulted from the errors. Four runs resulted from the North Mahaska miscues.
“Errors,” said North Mahaska coach Chris Sampson. “That’s the name of the game. Last night, and tonight they got five runs on errors.”
North Mahaska (16-10, 14-5) has begun hitting the ball well in recent games. The team continued Tuesday, but unable to gain the upper hand on their hosts.
“Offensively we are hitting the ball getting the ball down, but defensively we have to be more aggressive to the ball,” said Sampson. “That is eating us up.”
Sarah Bowen’s offense and defense kept North Mahaska in the mix. With the Hawks leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Kristal Beyer hit a shot to centerfield. What looked like a sure single — or more — became an out as Bowen dove to make the out. In the sixth inning, Shaylin Lukehart tried to score on a single from Madison Rasmusson. Bowen rifled the ball to catcher Michaela Heys, who tagged Lukehart for the out.
“Sarah made that diving catch and that one at the fence, then threw the girl out at home,” said Sampson. “Our outfield played well.”
As the Warhawks tried to rally in the top of the seventh, Bowen ripped a triple to score Paige Hoffer, who had led off the frame with a single. Bowen’s shot was the only extra base hit for North Mahaska.
Shelby Davis hit a single and a double to drive in two runs, and Rasmusson helped her own cause with two singles.
